it is not useful to tell people who do not control what operating system they use at work to use a different operating system at work.
@nora Yeah. I mean in theory I can use Linux but Windows is maintained by our IT and Linux I would have to deal with everything myself. And would still have to run Microsoft Office. And while there is a Java client for SAP it’s not as good as the Windows one. So lots of pain, little gain. Linux at home will have to suffice.
They're not even taking it all the way through process - first they need to submit a service request with helpdesk...
@nora However at my work the OS we use *is* under our control.
So when one of the Linux users (or occasionally Mac users) complains about this or that or the other system not working it *is*, if they choose to listen, useful to tell them to "reinstall Windows".
@TimWardCam yeah im sure that's super useful and they would not have thought of that
@nora
absolutely.
if you can only use windoze at workx switch to something else at home.
keep your private materials off those machines so they arent 'recall' captured
render to caesar only what is caesar's.
@nora But ma'am, this is Mastodon. What else will people say here, if not that?
@msbellows probably more misgendering, like you just did
@nora Apologies.
@nora Ditto for school/college/education environments (unless it's a BYO device environment you usually don't have any control over the OS) , and a lot of the time ditto for software too.
Most workplaces don't let just anyone have install permissions to begin with, and a lot of schools don't (on devices they control anyway). And for students, they might have to use a specific piece of software for an assignment, regardless of whether that's a good way to do it - or it might just be a case of 'if this doesn't open in the software the teacher uses then I'll get a zero mark and have to redo it'.
Like, if I had a dollar for every student out there who asked 'can we not use Adobe software for this course' and was told 'no, it's industry standard' and that was the end of the discussion, I would definitely have more than a few dollars. I bet I'd have even more for everyone in any industry who asked 'can we stop using Adobe software' and got the same response.
@nora However, it is useful to tell people who use Windows at work that they should inform their security team that soon Microsoft will be adding opt-out spyware they should be planning for.
