tbh i think the way people on mastodon give technical advice is a little bit like how seasoned stoners will sometimes tell you to take insane doses of edibles because that's what works for them except instead of thc it's technical expertise

@nora when I used to do technical hiring for gamedev, I’d ask potential programmers to “explain a relational database to a 5 year old”

Those that could do it well were generally also good at explaining things to people who did not specialize in code, such as artists or designers… or players.

More techies need to practice explaining why the sky is blue to a precocious child

@nora I mean, the same letters in "THC" are in "tech", so.....

@nora "You can't connect to a network? Just go into nmcli and run these commands." -Me, unfortunately :fox_googly:

@nora I just recently told off someone unironically recommending Arch Linux to someone who wanted a distro that they could install for their parents' computer-hooked-up-to-the-TV setup. like, I'm sure there weren't any bad intentions, but. come on

@nora oh that's so real.

It is kinda hard to think from the perspective of a layman on subjects you know a lot about but it's sooooo important.

@nora Also half of a 5mg edible is plenty for your first time. And absolutely do not take any more because "you don't feel anything."

I fucked up real bad once and took about 8 times what I really should've and it was an unpleasant time. You can kinda sober up a bit from alcohol by hydrating and eating but you can't do shit about being too high.

@nora I wasn't properly sober again for almost 24 hours and the time dilation felt like 10,000 years 😭

@nora i actually had this experience On Mastodon once

the stoner one that is lmao

@nora Honestly, vaping flower is probably the best way if you're inexperienced. Oh, and I use Arch, BTW. (Ok, technically it isn't Arch, it's Garuda which is based on Arch and I'm still just trying it out, but it's looking good so far)

@nora It is like when you ask someone what the time is, and they start to tell you how to build a clock, combined with a detailed history of timekeeping in human history.

@nora Oh dear, you are completely correct, guilty as charged

@nora before we had access to legal weed one time my dealer (who was also a local chiropractor) got overzealous and insisted I try a hit from his bong but I have a little baby tolerance so it sent me to space. I feel your metaphor on a deep, spiritual level.
